Welcome Message From

Dr. Faten Moftah,

President, AfSBT

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 11th International Congress of AfSBT that will be held in Kampala, Uganda from 4 to 7 March 2024. AfSBT is proud to hold another successful congresses in the beautiful city Kampala, a city that you can enjoy its pleasant weather all year through, and experience the breathtaking sceneries and wild life.

Blood availability and safety challenges and shortcomings are prevalent in most of the African countries specially in sub-Saharan Africa where political commitment is yet limited, as well as the high prevalence of transfusion transmissible infections, shortage of trained and motivated personnel in transfusion medicine, modest infrastructure and other resources. Voluntary non-remunerated blood donations are not easy to maintain, due to local different cultural beliefs, lack of public awareness, and limited logistics to make blood donation accessible.

AfSBT biannual congresses are excellent opportunities for the networking between professionals in our continent and other parts of the world, bring all the state of the art knowledge and information to the workers, and gain many practical ideas for the problem solving of many challenges. These challenges include among others: high rate of different kinds of anemia and hemoglobinopathies, bleeding from road traffic accidents, and obstetrical hemorrhages, and consequences to malaria. World Health Organization reported that about 60% of maternal deaths in low to medium income countries are due to postpartum hemorrhage. Access to safe blood and blood products in a timely manner for everyone and in every community worldwide should be a global target.

It gives me great pleasure to know that we are all coming together in Kampala for working together to make a positive impact in blood safety throughout the African continent and beyond. The theme for this congress is “Adopting Global Innovations and Technological Advancements in Blood Transfusion Services”. This theme will be realized by; scientific presentations, posters, debates, discussions, workshops, symposia and exhibitions.

At this congress we intend to bring together expertise and skills in transfusion medicine from all over the world, as well as young professionals in the field of blood transfusion medicine and science, to engage in interactive discussions that will address relevant updates in this field and health priorities in our continent. The committed board of the Africa Society for Blood Transfusion to blood quality, availability and safety, and the dedication to spread the Step-Wise Accreditation Program to all African countries encourages and motivates us to bring you the latest during this congress.

On behalf of AfSBT, I thank you all in advance for your attendance and participation to this congress and wish everyone fruitful and enjoyable scientific program and social & professional networking. I also like to to thank the Government of Uganda and the Local Organizing Committee for hosting this important event. I would like to sincerely thank all the prestigious speakers and our indispensible sponsors who have been pivotal in making this event to happen. My sincere appreciation also goes to the members of the organizing and scientific committees for a very high standard event, and finally to you all for attending in person and giving the congress its lively appearance.

I encourage you all to network and learn from each other, take back experiences to your respective countries and gain more friends in the global transfusion field. Enjoy the congress, the weather, and the sceneries.
